Preventing ice on tarpaulin roofs: system eligible for “de minimis” funding

The removal of all ice and snow residues from the vehicle roof and the trailer tarpaulin, as required by law, is not without danger on the road and is often difficult to carry out. Only in a few cases are aids available at rest areas. The Krone Ice Protect System is effective, literally offering a quirky solution.

Slippery slope: With the Krone Ice Protect Air system, an air hose located centrally between the roof tarpaulin and the crossbar is filled using a compressed air system. It thus raises the roof sheet, forming a kind of gable roof, so that standing water and snow slide off

Freezing temperatures quickly lead to snow and ice on the tarpaulin roof. “Falling ice sheets from truck roofs are not only dangerous, but also pose a major problem for freight forwarders in winter. The Krone Ice-Protect system prevents snow and ice from forming on the roof tarpaulin. The system increases the traffic and operational safety of the fleet and thus the safety of all road users,” explains Dr. Frank Albers, Managing Director Marketing and Sales at Krone.

Inflate centrally in 90 seconds via control panel
The driver can directly control the Krone Ice-Protect system via a control panel mounted on the vehicle’s bulkhead. Then an air hose located centrally between the roof tarpaulin and the crossbar is filled by supplying air from the on-board compressed air system and the roof tarpaulin is raised by about 175 mm. This forms a kind of gable roof so that water and snow slide off the tarpaulin during downtimes. The filling time after activating Krone Ice Protect is approximately 90 seconds. Before driving off, the hose lowers again at the push of a button or by actuating the brake, and the tarpaulin roof returns to its original state – free of snow and ice.

Retrofittable, eligible
Ice Protect is available for all tarpaulin semi-trailers and can also be easily retrofitted. The purchase can be subsidized by the “de minimis” funding. Another advantage: Some insurance companies grant a premium reduction if trailers are equipped with the Ice Protect system. Krone Ice Protect complies with the requirements of the StVZO and is also TÜV certified.
